Dutchess County District Attorney William "Bill" Grady was honored during a gathering on Monday, Dec. 11 at the Poughkeepsie Grandview.
During the event, Grady said, "It had been an honor and privilege to serve the people of Dutchess County as their District Attorney."
With a total of 50 years in law enforcement under his belt, Grady said his entire career has been dedicated to holding offenders accountable, ensuring that the needs of crime victims were met, and being proactive in creating and supporting programs for offenders that deal with the underlying causes of crime such as alcohol, drug abuse, and mental health issues.
The longtime chief law enforcement officer pointed to the creation of the Special Victims Bureau, Violent Crime Bureau, and DWI Bureau, and the organization of the Dutchess County Drug Task Force, as important achievements in his career.
He also played a significant role in helping to organize the county’s Domestic Response Team.
Grady’s career began in 1970 when he was hired as the first full-time assistant District Attorney by then DA Albert M. Rosenblatt.
“At that time, it was a small office with seven part-time ADAs," Grady said. "Since I was elected as DA in 1983, the size of the office has grown to 36 full-time ADAs, including 20 women. Seven Bureaus were also created to deal with the complexity and increased numbers of various crimes.”
Most important, Grady said was the quality of attorneys who have dedicated their entire careers to public service to keep communities safe.
He is looking forward to retirement and spending more quality time with his family, including four grandchildren.
Next at the helm is Anthony P. Parisi, who is currently the Major Crimes Bureau Chief in the office. He will be taking office on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
